about

Summersteps Records is proud to announce a special reissue of acid folk legend Ed Askew's 1997 album Little Houses. Originally self-released as a handmade cassette and mailed to friends as a gift. It was recorded and mixed on 4 track cassette at the artist's home in Washington Heights.

For those not in the know, Ed Askew is a painter and singer-songwriter who lives in New York City. Initially known for his 1968 debut solo album on ESP-Disk, Ask the Unicorn. The album featured Ed's unique voice accompanied by his Martin tiple (a 10 stringed guitar-like ukulele sized instrument). While the record received little acclaim at the time, the subsequent decades have seen the album grow in legend and stature as a high water mark in the loner folk corner of the outsider music genre. Askew has spent the last few decades working on new music, and performing; constantly expanding on his sound, while incorporating new production techniques and songwriting approaches. In addition to numerous self-releases, Ed has released records on such esteemed labels such as Tin Angel, De Stijl, Drag City, Okraïna, Holy Page, and OSR. He and his band (Ed Askew Band) have toured with the Black Swans, Baby Copperhead, and in support of Bill Callahan.
